What we’re doing for Housing

We’re building more Homes for Australians – training more tradies, kick-starting construction, and helping first home buyers.

The long-term solution is supply. That’s why we have a target of building 1.2 million homes through our $32 billion Homes for Australia Plan.

Building More Homes

• Starting the biggest housing build in Australia’s history by investing $32 billion in housing – 6 times more than the Liberals budgeted over a whole decade.

• Building 55,000 social and affordable homes – 5 times more than the Liberals built over a whole decade. The Liberals and the Greens worked together to delay this investment.

• Over $4.5 billion to help states build infrastructure – like roads and water – so more homes can be built sooner, and incentivise states to cut red tape and build more homes.

• Introducing a 2-year ban on foreign investors buying existing homes.

Helping Australians Buy a Home

• We’ve helped 140,000 first home buyers by guaranteeing their loans so they can buy with a 5 per cent deposit and no mortgage insurance, saving first home buyers up to $35,000.

• 1 in 3 first home buyers are getting a first home guarantee from the Federal Government, so people don’t have to rely on the bank of Mum and Dad.

• This is more than double the number of first home buyers the Liberals helped.

• Helping 40,000 workers buy with a deposit as low as 2 per cent, with shared equity so the purchase price and repayments are lower – through Help to Buy shared equity, which the Liberals opposed.

Making Renting Fairer

• Increasing Rent Assistance in back-to-back budgets. Up 45 per cent since the election.

• Making renting better through new national standards – in partnership with the states:

• Banning ‘no grounds’ evictions

• Limiting rent increases to once per year

• Banning rent bidding and limiting break-lease fees

• Minimum accommodation standards

• Giving renters a right of appeal against retaliatory landlords

• Stronger privacy protections and reduced document requirements

• Rights for family violence victims to end leases without penalty

Training Workers to Build Homes

• Training more tradies – introducing Free TAFE and $10,000 incentive payments for construction apprentices.
